About this poster
Commissioned by Saul Williams and Matt Morgan of Afro-Punk, this design was created for the 2009 Saul Williams / Afro-Punk Tour—used across posters, merch, and promotional materials. The concept explores recurring themes in Saul Williams’ work, especially how deeply ingrained cultural patterns and “sacred” social beliefs are shaped and reinforced by manufactured popular culture.
The piece juxtaposes two iconic symbols from different eras of Western pop culture.
The first is the 19th-century “Golliwog” character, originally commercialized in England before spreading to the United States. Once used widely in advertising—from food products to consumer goods—it was embraced as a profitable visual motif of its time. Today, it’s recognized as a symbol of prejudice and ignorance that once permeated mainstream culture.
The second reference is the lightning-bolt face paint made famous by David Bowie on the cover of Aladdin Sane. The artist previously used this symbol on a separate print—later adapted as a Foo Fighters show poster—where its immediate association with Bowie demonstrated how a simple icon can evoke immense cultural memory.
In this piece, both symbols—separated by a century—are merged. The result highlights the strange, powerful, and often conflicting nature of popular culture: divine, twisted, beautiful, and sometimes difficult to confront.
