“DERO: East” by Jermaine Rogers revives one of the artist’s most iconic characters in a striking new setting. Two panda-like Dero bears—recognizable by their glowing red eyes and mischievous grins—sit among autumn maple leaves and bamboo, blending earthy greens with warm oranges and reds for a distinctly Asian-inspired atmosphere.
A 7-color screenprint, the piece marks “the return of the Dero,” Rogers’ covert operatives who, according to his mythology, disguise themselves as pandas to move unseen “within the hidden places of the Orient.” The artwork’s mix of whimsy and subversion adds a clever layer of humor and mystery beneath its serene surface.
Along the side appear four Chinese characters—怒 (anger), 協 (cooperation), 平 (peace), 權 (power)—representing the balance of opposing forces that defines the Dero’s world. This interplay between innocence and menace, peace and power, gives the print its philosophical edge.
Technically precise yet thematically playful, “DERO: East” captures the tension and charm that have made Jermaine Rogers’ work so distinctive.
