I'm excited to show off my first print of 2026 🥀
Cincinnati is Queen City, and the original home of Bicycle playing cards, so I wanted to pay homage to the classic playing card design. A huge thank you to @umphreys_merch for giving me full creative power 🙌🏼
I started this design with a clear mind and a vision of what I wanted. After the sketch was laid out and the references were collected I got terribly ill with the super flu. It consumed our holidays and gave me a clean slate mentally as I came out of the fog. When I returned to the piece it felt like my original concept was a distant memory, created in a different lifetime. I had to reattach myself to the vision to return to the execution. Due to this process it feels like the final piece is a divergence from my initial concept. This final piece is grittier, and more real than I had planned, and I'm happy with that. The world is gritty right now.
It's hard to talk about the process or product of my art right now without feeling like I'm taking away from the near constant slew of modern horrors that are plaguing the world. Maybe keeping some art in the doom scroll rotation is a healthy reprieve. I don't have the answers.
