Hello internet friends! I’m happy to get this year’s gig poster gears rolling with a brand spankin’ new print for Dave Matthews! Dave & Tim are currently doing their annual residency down in Mexico, and it was a real treat to have been asked to put something together to commemorate the occasion.
I would genuinely like to draw every single bird ever at least once between now and when my hands turn to dust, so I was happy to check off the majestic scarlet macaw with this one. My angle was to give it a cosmic-Mayan-psychedelic twist, drawing inspiration from ancient stone calendars and jungle themes. The inverted step pyramids along the bottom are my fav. Going into this, I started by illustrating the bird, and then sort of just figured out the background as I went along—I guess you could say I was…. Wingin’ it.
