“WHY DID YOU DRAW A HOUSE” 🏠 Earlier this year, I was walking in my neighborhood and a couple blocks down the street was this house that was in the midst of a siding project, except that when they’d torn the old siding down, they revealed these gigantic vintage Gold Medal Flour signs that had been walled over, completely filling two entire sides of the house. I snapped a couple quick photos and kept on my way.
Maybe two weeks later, I got the call from the homie @brokenpressdesign asking if I’d make the posters for this show, wherein @minusthebear would be unearthing their excellent MENOS EL OSO album for a 20th Anniversary tour…obviously I wanted to, obviously I instantly knew what the poster would be like, and obviously that’s exactly what happened.
Around that same time, this house and the story of this lost signage bubbled up all over the local news, which really solidified its resonance for me: It’s reassuring in a moment filled with garbage to see people get excited about a cool weird thing…I need that. It’s googleable, there’s a few good articles out about it, and some cool photos and all that.
Interestingly enough, a few days ago I got an email through our store’s little contact form thing; it was from the owner of the house…he was asking how to get one, and seemed like he wasn’t trying to trick me into being served a cease & desist, so a couple hours ago I left a little weatherproof, (mostly) snow-resistant tube on the porch of the same house I drew for this thing.
Anyway, thanks for reading this thing and grabbing stuff during this weird weekend of Landland Blackened Not-Friday-Now madness, and may all your houses have the strange ghosts of billboards secretly buried within their walls.
