About this poster
Adapted from a recent drawing this is an eight layer screen print inspired by Ken Kesey's cryptic dedication from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". An ethereal recounting of events goes something like this... In 1959 while at Stanford University writing his first manuscript, Kesey took part in CIA sponsored LSD experiments of unethical, questionable and ultimately illegal designs. He emerged from those "rooms" resilient, unscathed, enlightened and was told... "dont let anyone know"... While continuing his graduate work at Stanford and experiencing a writer's block his neighbor "Vik" Lovell suggested he apply for a night watchman job at the Menlo Park Veterans hospital. There Kesey encountered the same doctor who ran the LSD experiments and who himself had come to understand the inherent ethical dilemma they posed. As the story goes, Kesey, now the nightwatchman in this ward, used his keys to infiltrate the doctor's desk and procure the drugs that would supply the Merry Pranksters antics for "a long time"...
Perhaps more profoundly important was Kesey's interactions with disabled and mentally challenged war veterans during these night shifts. Kesey came to believe that these patients were not insane but merely misunderstood and mistakenly labeled and further institutionalized by the establishment that was supposed to be helping them.
All these experiences inspired his groundbreaking novel "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". A parallel influence on my drawing is the Metallica song "Welcome Home Sanitarium" and that is a story for another time.
