About this poster
This rare and visually striking 1967 handbill marks the only known performance by Hugh Masekela at the historic Fillmore Auditorium. Often hailed as the Father of South African Jazz, Masekela was a visionary composer and a gifted player of the trumpet, trombone, and flugelhorn. Over the course of his celebrated career, he received three Grammy nominations and achieved international recognition. This handbill was produced around the time of his pop-jazz hit Up, Up and Away, and the concert it promotes took place between the dates associated with the BG-50 and BG-51 Fillmore posters. An important piece reflecting both musical and cultural history from a pivotal era.
