About this poster
The band had hit me up earlier in the year to create a diptych for their St Louis run and they wanted something city-centric for the artwork. I knew I didn’t want to do anything with the Arch or anything baseball related, so after doing a bit of research on the city, I found out that they have a pretty awesome sculpture park in the middle of downtown (not far from the Arch). It was created in 2009 and has somewhere in the ballpark of two dozen statues stretched out over two city blocks. The idea was to do my own interpretations of some of them, but while doing my research on the city, I also found that there were a handful of ties between the Wizard of Oz and St Louis. I’ve always been fan of W.W. Denslow’s iconic Wizard of Oz illustrations, so the new concept became to re-interpret some of the sculptures from Citygarden, but as Wizard of Oz style characters (there's a very, very subtle nod to Chuck Berry in there too). I’d also been looking for an excuse to draw a ridiculous tandem bike for a while, St Louis has a growing bike scene and I needed something for all of these characters to do anyway, so it seemed like perfect fit.
