About this poster
This classic Family Dog poster, titled "Dian", features a striking central image of a semi-nude woman draped in sheer fabric. While often mistaken for Josephine Marcus—wife of famed Old West lawman Wyatt Earp—the image is actually from a 1914 art print titled Kaloma, originally used as the cover for the sheet music Kaloma, Valse Hesitante (Hesitation Waltz) by composer Gire Goulineaux. The image later became a popular World War I-era pinup.
Artist Alton Kelley adapted Kaloma for this poster, using the vivid red background and rising orange Family Dog logos to create a bold, psychedelic composition. Although the credit reads “Mouse Studios!”, this work was created solely by Kelley.
The poster promotes a series of concerts held at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, beginning on September 30, 1967, featuring Vanilla Fudge and the Charles Lloyd Quartet, with visuals by the North American Ibis Alchemical Co.
Two original printings of this poster exist:
- First printing (FD-85-OP-1): Black type in the ticket outlet strip, printed on uncoated index stock, approximately 14" x 20".
- Second printing (FD-85-RP-2): Identical except for green type in the ticket strip.
This design appears in The Art of Rock (page 101) and is documented in the King Guide (12th ed), page 151, which notes the misidentification of the figure as Josephine Marcus.
