About this poster

The Hells Angels had a surprisingly steady presence in the early San Francisco music scene from about 1965–67, even if it’s not something most poster collectors immediately think of. This handbill is from a February 3, 1967 show at California Hall featuring Big Brother & The Holding Company and Blue Cheer.

The photo in the center was taken on December 17, 1966 during the “Now” Death of Money March (referenced in The Death of Money by Joel Kurtzman). It captures “Hairy Henry” (Hank) with Phyllis, a member of the Diggers, riding on his bike. Hank was arrested shortly after for letting her stand while they rode, and when Chocolate George stepped in, he was arrested too—both ending up hauled off to jail.

A great piece of ephemera tying together the bands, the scene, and the counterculture characters who were part of the moment.
