About this poster
"When I got the design brief that the aesthetic for the new tour was going to be a Men In Black / Alien / etc theme, I knew right away that I didn't want to go with a traditional Grey alien. Instead, I wanted to make some sort of hodge podge alien with elements of The Thing, body horror, Kaiju anatomy posters, and some brain creature, that I think was from a 70's D&D catalog (if anyone knows what it is,I'd be curious to find out). I found a xerox in my studio that I probably photocopied out of a book back when I was going to college in the early 2000's. I just thought having the veins on the outside of the brain and then creating various shades of gray in between with tight crosshatching was a really cool way to render a brain that would be fun to try and pull off. Playing with different textures was something else I really tried to focus on with this one, to give all of the various parts of the alien distinctive looks, like when the alien in The Thing is in it's states of metamorphosis. Most of the inking and crosshatching was done with a brush and ink, but all of the interior drawing was done with a charcoal pencil to try and get that old textbook illustration vibe, and then other parts like the tail and fatty layers were all done with technical pens." - RB
